Álvaro de la Vega

Álvaro de la Vega was born in 1954 in Paradela (Lugo, Spain) where he lived his childhood, fact that will influence all his artistic creation. Because of familiar matters, he moved to Luarca (Asturias, Spain) for a few years. He came back to Lugo and he finished high school. He had his first exhibition in this city, but there is only one artwork left. When he was 22 he moved to Barcelona and he studied Fine Arts. In the very first moment, painting was his way of expression and his main influences came from photography and comic, and he even worked on graffiti.

In 1990, when he settled down in Corcubión (A Coruña, Spain), he started exploring the language of sculpture.  The starting point was figure, both human being’s and animal’s figure, “We are skin hold by a structure. That is why I made a skeleton as a starting point”. He had his sculpture first solo exhibition in Barcelona in Tom Maddock Gallery in 1991. In the early sculptures he used painting for strengthening the expression.

During the 90’ he used new materials, such as: iron, pottery and stone, always natural materials and linked to traditional professions. “Iron is a humble material, an everyday material; inside the iron live together collective and ephemeral, the individuality, the loneliness and the strict”. In the last 90’he had many exhibitions in galleries and Institutions. In that moment he began his international career and his artworks became part of important private and public collections.

In the middle of the first decade of this new century the artist studies in depth the relationship between the artwork and the space. He uses different options, such as: cables fixed on the wall or from the ceilings, so they produce tension; brackets or supports that seem like interventions in space. This relationship between space, artwork and spectator is still the basement of his artistic discourse. In fact, this mature and depurated discourse develops wealthy respecting its fundamental principles. In artist’s words:  “a sculpture is a presence that communicates with emptiness and I believe that the spectator must begin from that.”
